Bridging the Communication Gap with Stances
As you head off to goal-get this week, I’m SURE you’re hoping to communicate well.
No one says, "Wow, I'm going to put forth effort today and I sure hope it falls flat to those I'm speaking to in my marriage and at work."
Yet at some point or way you likely will likely be frustrated. This happened to me just this weekend when I all but refused to bring feelings into a conversation with my husband. When I finally did, of course we moved into a much healthier direction. (This was and is so unnatural however for me as someone who has gotten very locked into my own style of pushing or going away before I process or share intense or vulnerable feelings!)
In fact, it's natural for all of us to refuse to balance an area of life we've repressed for a reason when we're not considering the best ways to balance our minds, hearts, and actions.
Yet communication breaks down when we just automatically rely on just one or two of these ways of leaning into our best strategies. And yet we dig our heels in and lean in harder still if our audience misses us...
However, typically the strategy that is missing is the very one that will both refine and sharpen our message, both as a listener as well as in our roles as hearers of other people's messages.
In speaking roles and in marriage, this can absolutely get us into a lot of trouble and we can truly make both our audience and the next generation pay for our mistakes if we're not learning to balance.
Because of this communication gap, we suffer, our messages suffer, and our people we are here to influence suffer.
As you can see, this is why you definitely don't want to miss this episode with Enneagram theorist, pastor, author, and coach Sean Palmer, Enneagram 3 (3-1 Glow).
He takes us on a deep dive into this journey both on this E + M Podcast as well as in his brand-new chart-topping book Speaking by the Numbers as we cover goals for every group and so much more! Yes, Sean is bringing it on the podcast today and his book and the time on the podcast with him truly refreshed me as I was seeking to learn on a deeper level about communication breakdowns!
