Deeper Dive Brain Boosters for YOU!
Dr. Krissy Thomas, Ph.D, our guest on this Monday’s pod, dives deeper with even more tips on her social media outlets and I’m so glad!
Who doesn’t want more brain health?
She reminds us that the brain we are born with is almost like a blank canvas at birth but that is our life experiences that physically shape our brain.
She reminds us that if she were born blind, her visual cortex (where vision is encoded in the brain) her brain would look very different than yours, because you’ve had sight all your life.
Our experiences dictate how our brain cells connect and how our brain chemicals will work, and thus it’s important that we pay attention to what we expose our brain to through our 5 senses and especially that we’re mindful of our thoughts - including thoughts about marriage.
She reminds us that if we’re not mindful of what we are feeding our brains, once that pattern is stimulated through repeated behaviors or thoughts, it becomes hard-wired in the brain and difficult to change.
It takes effort and intention and also a choice to narrate grace and love regarding your spouse. So take this info as a true GLOW UP for your creativity in thoughts and actions in life and relationship ….
And here’s the full scoop. What your brain sees as a reality, is completely up to you, as Victor Frankl also reminded us even from his concentration camp days - you can choose some things.
And writing helps, or rather re-writing (in essence, rewiring) you to do just that.
Neuroscientists have long known that individuals have better memory for material they’ve created and written down than for material they’ve only read.
This “active process” of writing works to move information into long-term memory.
We can apply this principle to goal planning. When thinking about your relationship goals, create a picture in your mind, make it vivid, and write it down.
When creating a picture of your goal, here’s what she suggests.
Visualize what it can look like and feels like to make these goals happen,
Think about who would notice a difference (and benefit) if you brought these goals to life,
Think about if you’ve done things in your past that shows you have already begun to demonstrate the necessary skills for your goals,
Think about what is required and what it would take to be one step closer to attaining that goal, and last but not least, write it down.
Take some time now to do this a bit or write down a time you could do that!
