Capture the Moments Together
Although we must have times for envisioning our future dreams, presence is a gift we must embrace right now.
When we glimpse a flash frame of life right now, relationally, it’s important to see we find so we can intentionally make a very small step forward. But don’t for a minute think this step will be boring.
Small and intentional steps can be very mighty as long as you’re committed to the process of building and stoking the flames of love. Learn more about this in the “Enneagram in Marriage” book!
In your day-to-day life you’ve been setting up habits for weekly date night, you’ve been setting up habits for healthier bodies, and you’ve been trying to stop the fires of intimacy. But the truth is, we spend most of our lives in the everyday experience of busyness, errands, work, and hopefully within that connection instead of just distancing.
As we learned from Emily Wingfield yesterday on the podcast, sometimes, whatever our type, being intentional feels like we have tentacles shooting out at all directions and in the sheer overwhelm, we can forget to nurture and nourish ourselves and the very love of our lives.
As a matter of fact, it takes a lot of grit to truly fight for it.
The doldrums and the daily toil just add up.
You need to get gas or you need to get milk or you need to go get stamps.
Perhaps there’s a dental appointment you weren’t expecting or the garbage disposal breaks.
At any rate, whether it be actual headaches or just momentary disruptions, this is the stuff of life that can get a couple off track.
So just as you heard from Emily on the podcast, about really taking some time for rest and boundaries, so do I want you to be mindful to focus, to concentrate on your love.
Here are a few ways you can do so!
Use an app like Structured to actually plan, and times with your spouse for replenishment.
Once you have this time penciled in, don’t let anything get scheduled in this time. Treat it like you would any other important appointment.
It’s also important that you take time for noticing which areas of your life are wasting time. As you take a freeze-frame of your life for a moment with me now, what stands out to you the most? Is it Instagram scrolling? Is it reality TV? Is it getting so busy with the kids or the grandkids that you forget your spouse?
Share these matters with your spouse on a walk-and-talk later today if you get a chance for more conversation. Ask them to contribute ideas for how you might be able to find a little bit more time for this week’s daily rhythms together.
Get accountability with a coach here who can help guide you in planning intentional time together!
I know that you’re learning all the time and I’m so encouraged by that! This world is such a better place because you are working so hard to share your gifts individually but ALSO allowing in some faith that when you do let go for a little while to calm down and to relax well with your partner or spouse, you’re truly building up a world of love as you glow together too.
